Contest scams are big business for cyber criminals who tap into the dream of winning a large sum of money or a grand prize in a contest.
Some of the biggest fake contests include:
- You're a winner! Being told you've been chosen to win a prize – usually a cash prize, car or vacation. The catch is you must purchase a specific product in order to qualify and claim your prize. A legitimate contest would never ask you to pay.
- Sweepstakes scam. If you enter a sweepstakes contest, there's no telling whether or not it's a real contest. If it's fake, the scammers will go through the same motions as though it were real in order to convince you it is. You'll likely receive a call a few weeks after you enter the fake contest from a "lawyer" claiming you've won a large prize. However, you'll be asked to send money to cover taxes in order to claim your prize. This is when you can be sure the sweepstakes is fraudulent.
