Staying safe after you swipe right: Tips for mobile dating apps
February 13, 2017
Mobile dating apps have become a very popular way for people to meet. The convenience of being able to meet someone through the swipe of a smartphone can be so enticing in our busy lives.
One important thing to keep in mind – like with any mobile app – is to proceed with caution! Below are four tips to help protect yourself when using online dating apps.
1. Watch out for catfishing
Catfishing refers to an individual assuming a false identity online, in particular to pursue emotional/romantic relationships in the virtual world. You can protect yourself by looking out for red flags like:
- Trouble locating the person’s other social media profiles, or any online presence;
- They can’t send up to date photos in the moment, and can’t video chat;
- They have far-fetched tales of woe right out of the gate, and hint around about money problems.
2. Let your friends know where you’re going
When taking the next step and meeting up with that special someone you’ve met online in real life, you should always let a friend know where you’re going to be. There are even apps that can permit your friends to see your location (with your approval, of course.)
3. Always protect your personal information
When signing up to use mobile dating apps watch out for requests for personal information that seem excessive. Also, always avoid giving out personal information to other users.
4. Report. Report. Report.
Remember to always report misconduct by other users to the app’s administrators, such as catfishing attempts or abusive messages. By reporting them, you can help protect someone else from having to face the same hassle!
Mobile dating apps can be a fun way to meet new people, but it’s important not to get lost in the moment. Always put your personal safety first!
